Medieval Costumes for ‘Joan of Arc’

Joan was a young peasant girl born in France during the ‘Hundred Year War’ with England. From an early age her father would talk to her about the poor conditions of France and how it was being dominated by England. Whilst growing up she had visions of saving her country and at the age of only 17 years she set out to meet with the Dauphin, whom at that stage did not have a real leader in the army. Through pure determination and passion for her country she was given control over an entire army and she led them to war. In a short period of time her army had achieved many victories and she was awarded with noble status. Joan of Arc died at the early age of 18yrs, being burnt at stake by the English. Her legend lives on for many. There is even a ‘Joan of Arc’ parade held annually in New Orleans in honor of her birthday.

Medieval costumes imitating Joan of Arc make original and creative costumes for any dress up occasion. She used to dress in a coat of armor and was known for wearing men’s clothes, reason being so she was not noticed by the enemy. There are many photo’s in history books of her dressed up in her coat of armor on horse back, holding a sword and carrying her flag or banner.

Joan of Arc costumes can be very exciting and innovative and there are so many to choose from. In this article to mention just a few:-

  •  There are men’s ‘knight in shining armor’ costumes which of course can be worn by the ladies too. Joan of Arc wore one so why can’t we? These costumes
  • A popular costume is a gorgeous red velvet full length gown with gold trim. The skirt part of the costume is red and the bodice part is metallic silver, tight fitting with chain mall sleeves and cuffs. The bodice is a replica of armor with a big cross symbol on the front. The cross resembles Joan of Arc’s religion, she was a strong Christian. With the costume one would also wear a cross on a chain as a necklace and of course you need to have a sword in your hand at all times to be on the alert.
  • A more cost effective costume could consist of tight red tights worn with a longish grey chainmail look blouse sweater. On the sweater you can paint a large cross. Wear a wide black belt or sash around the waist. Wrap a black gauntlet with lace ties around the lower arms. Wear it with black long boots. To finish it off add a mustard yellow cloak to wear over the outfit, a sword and a banner.

Medieval costumes can be sourced from a large variety of stores but some can be costly. Before you make your choice ensure you have done your homework properly and got prices at various different stores. Some medieval costumes are really easy to put together yourself too at a fraction of what it would cost you to go and buy.
